Embedded aerospace software in C++ for Bombardier
Through SII Group, we delivered embedded software in C++ for Bombardier in the aerospace domain — written for deterministic behaviour on constrained hardware, with rigorous testing, code review and traceability. Programme details are subject to client confidentiality.
Bombardier is a major aerospace manufacturer. Working with SII Group as integrator partner, we contributed embedded software in C++ to Bombardier’s aerospace engineering work.
Embedded aerospace software runs on dedicated hardware with tight limits on memory and processing time, and must behave the same way every time. It is developed inside large engineering programmes, with an integrator partner, many teams and strict processes.
Details of the programmes, systems and hardware involved are subject to client confidentiality. This page describes how we work.
The challenge
- Deterministic behaviour: predictable timing and memory use, with no surprises at run time
- Resource-constrained targets, where every allocation, copy and cycle counts
- Demanding verification: every requirement implemented, tested and traceable
- Working inside a large engineering programme, through an integrator partner and alongside many other teams
- Code that has to stay readable and maintainable over a long product life
How we engineered it
Modern C++ written for constrained, deterministic targets, and verified at every step.
- 1
Modern C++ for embedded
Strong typing, RAII, constexpr and templates used to catch errors at compile time, within a disciplined subset of the language suited to embedded targets.
- 2
Deterministic, resource-aware code
Bounded loops, predictable control flow, no hidden costs, and careful, mostly static use of memory and processing time.
- 3
Requirements-driven development
Each function implemented against identified requirements, with design decisions recorded.
- 4
Rigorous testing
Unit and integration tests written alongside the code and run systematically on every change.
- 5
Systematic code review
Every change peer-reviewed against the programme’s coding rules before it is accepted.
- 6
End-to-end traceability
Links maintained between requirements, code and tests, so every requirement can be followed to its implementation and its verification.
Working with an integrator partner
Engineering capacity delivered inside a large programme, through SII Group.
Inside the partner’s processes
We followed the integrator’s and the client’s engineering processes, tools and quality rules.
Clear interfaces
Well-defined software interfaces and agreed deliverables between teams.
Complete deliveries
Code, tests and traceability delivered together, ready for review.
Long-term maintainability
Readable, documented code that other teams can take over and evolve.
Engineering practices
- Coding rulesConsistent C++ coding rules applied across the codebase and checked in review.
- Verification disciplineNothing is done until it is tested, reviewed and traced.
- ConfidentialityProgramme details and client information handled under strict confidentiality.
